Fulbright Winner Headed to Mexico

One of seven NC State students to earn a competitive Fulbright grant this year, Emma Cathell will spend 9-10 months teaching English to students at a school or university in Mexico. Cathell's role will also include serving as a cultural ambassador for the United States.

Writers Make Top Sci-Fi, Fantasy List

Five writers from NC State’s MFA in Creative Writing Program are receiving recognition for their work in science fiction and fantasy. Editors of the Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy series selected stories from one MFA student, three alumni and one faculty member to its latest list of notable stories. Among the winners, A Contracorriente Press' Copyeditor Julie Steinbacher.

Aspiring to be osteoarchaeologists, federal prosecutors and museum curators, the latest cohort of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Scholars have big plans for the future. Thanks to contributions from college donors, the seven recipients of this year’s Dean’s Scholar Award can also plan on being something else — experiential learners.

German Professor Earns Top Prize

Assistant Professor of German Jonathan Wipplinger has won recognition for his research into blackface minstrelsy in German culture. "The Racial Ruse: On Blackness and Blackface Comedy in fin-de-siecle Germany" was voted as the best article in The German Quarterly (vol. 84) by the journal's 16-member editorial board. Wipplinger will receive the Max Kade Prize -- one of the most prestigious prizes in German Studies -- for his work.
