Portuguese Studies
Explore the rich tapestry of the Portuguese language and the varied cultures of the Lusophone world, unlocking a world of possibilities.
Program Overview
Courses in Portuguese studies offer great opportunities for students at NC State to learn the fundamental aspects of communication in the official language of nine countries spread across four continents. Portuguese courses at NC State also include exposure to cultural features of the Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world, further enhancing students’ understanding of the historical influence of Portuguese in distinct regions of the globe.
As part of the “BRIC” — a grouping acronym that refers to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, which are all deemed to be on the path to advanced economies — Portuguese-speaking Brazil is becoming one of the world’s newest economic and political powerhouses. Knowledge of Portuguese can give you a distinct advantage in many diverse sectors, including business, agriculture, the biomedical field, environmental studies and beyond.
Minor in Portuguese
Our program includes courses that combine learning the language and culture, and that can help prepare you for many types of careers, giving you an edge in a highly competitive job market.
Inter-Institutional Program Portuguese Courses
Students are able to continue their studies in upper-level Portuguese language courses and related transdisciplinary courses offered at select other campuses within the state via the Inter-Institutional Program. Students interested in taking classes via the Inter-Institutional Program should check with the Portuguese section coordinator and review the registration requirements on the Program page.
