New Course Focused on Asian-American Culture and Literature to Be Offered in the Spring

The Technician recently reported about a new course focused on Asian-American culture and literature that will be offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in the coming Spring semester. This will be the first course of this kind ever to be offered at NC State.

In the article, Foreign Languages and Literatures professor Nathaniel Isaacson explains that he often has been approached by Asian-American students saying that Asian-American students “felt that they wanted to see classes that addressed some of their issues as Asian-Americans rather than just classes that address Asian studies within Asia.” Prof. Isaacson will be teaching the new course. He is assistant professor of modern Chinese literature and has a Ph.D. in Asian languages and cultures from the University of California-Los Angeles. He is a faculty member of the recently created Asian Language concentration at NC State.

The idea for the course materialized after Natalie Nguyen, assistant director of the GLBT Center, reached out to Isaacson about the possibility of creating a class that better represented the Asian-American students experience and that offered other students the opportunity to learn more about Asian-American culture and history. Isaacson realized then that it was a good time to get such a course started.
