VOLAR Team Receives 2015 Opal Mann Green Engagement Award
On Monday April 13th, at 4:30 p.m., the VOLAR leadership team and Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty Shelley Garrigan, James McConnell, and Debbie Kane received the Opal Mann Green Engagement Award during a ceremony celebrated in the McKimmon Center. The event is part of the Annual Outreach and Engagement Awards Celebration organized by NC State Office of Outreach and Engagement (OOE).
VOLuntarios Ahora in Raleigh (VOLAR) is an outreach program that partners students of Spanish with organizations that address the needs of the Hispanic community, in a way that is mutually-beneficial to both the students — who practice and enhance their language skills while gaining professional experience and “soft skills” — and the outreach organizations — that are better able to fulfill their mission with the help of these valuable volunteers.
According to the OOE Website, the Opal Mann Green Engagement Award is awarded every year to a team of individuals whose outstanding contributions and accomplishments as engaged scholars demonstrated the practice of collaborative democratic strategies. Eligible teams can include community partners, staff, volunteers, and faculty of NC State University colleges and its extension, engagement, and economic development units.
In addition to this important award, recently VOLAR also received the Fred Fletcher Award for Outstanding Cultural Resources Volunteer. This important award is conferred by the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department to recognize individual volunteers and organizations that have helped with a multitude of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department projects.
Congratulations!!
