French Scholar Janet Beizer Talks about Harlequins, Patchwork Eating in 19th Century France

On Tuesday, March 17, at 4:30 p.m. in Withers 331, Dr. Janet Beizer, Professor of French and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Romance Languages at Harvard University, gave a talk entitled, “Savor the Harlequins:  Patchwork Eating in Nineteenth-Century Paris.”

Her presentation, accompanied by slides of archival images, focused on “the harlequin” or recomposed leftovers, as an alimentary and aesthetic figure of modernity. Nearly 60 students, faculty, and members of the community attended.

The talk was part of the department’s Spring 2015 Brownbag/Research Talks series that this year includes lectures by several distinguished speakers.
