Alumna Receives Grant for Proposal Connecting John Dewey’s Philosophy to Foreign Language Teaching

Spanish Education Alumna Kalavik McNamara (’14) presented her research at a session of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) state conference on October 3rd, 2014.  Her session — titled “Dewey or Don’t We?” — focused on Dewey’s principles of meaningful and relevant instruction as it pertains to teaching foreign languages.

Kallie’s presentation was based on her Honors Research paper while studying at NCSU. At the time, Kallie received a $750 research grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research to assist her research, which connected John Dewey’s philosophy of education to foreign language teaching in order to engage students actively in their learning, make learning relevant to their everyday lives, and to study their responses to Dewey’s methodology.
