Una noche de poesía … A Poetry Night with Sigma Delta Pi
“Each poem is unique,” Mexican poet and Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz once said, and “all poetry, with greater or lesser intensity, is latent in each work.”
And that precisely is what AP Spanish students learned last April when the NC State chapter of the Spanish Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi held a “Poetry Night” for students from William G. Enloe High School.
Over 40 high school students came to campus for a series of poetry workshops in Withers Hall, led by Sigma Delta Pi advisor Dr. Jim Michnowicz and student leaders. The students wrote haikus and “I poems” in Spanish, and shared their poems with attendants.
Poetry Night finished with Venezuelan food and an “Ask a College Student” panel, where Honor Society members answered questions about NC State and the benefits of majoring in Spanish.
The event was sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Student Activities Council and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
By Samuel F. Sotillo, with Jim Michnowicz.
