Alumna Forges Path for Future Foreign Language Students

At NC State, hardworking students are one of our biggest assets. Mechanical Engineering and German alumna, Maria Withrow, put her more than 10 years of German to the test twice in college, first by studying abroad at the University of Berlin and working in Dusseldorf, and the second time in 2016 while working in Munich. Withrow graduated from NC State in May 2015 and expects to complete her Masters in Industrial Manufacturing and Systems Engineering in May 2017.

Simone Tucker is a freshman majoring in International Studies and Arabic. Recently elected Humanities and Social Sciences Student Senator for 2017-18, she is a member of the Mock Trial Team and multiple language clubs, resides in the Impact Leadership Village, and looks forward to a career in government or nonprofits.

In the Spotlight: Hindi-Urdu Professor Nilakshi Phukan

Growing up in a rural Indian village, Foreign Languages and Literatures Hindi-Urdu professor, Nilakshi Phukan, faced the common obstacle of being viewed as a second class citizen because of her gender. Around the age of nine, her father moved her family of eight to a nearby small town in hope of better opportunities. A social norm at the time, it was her father that set goals for what his six children were to become. Hence, he determined she was to receive her Ph.D. in Hindi. She jokes about the fact she probably didn’t know what a Ph.D. was at the time, but nevertheless, she was driven to fulfill her dad’s dream.
