Student of the Month: Olivia Zalecki

Meet Olivia Zalecki, a junior double majoring in Chinese and International Politics and our student of the month. She is a Caldwell Fellow, founder and president of Adopted Students Union at NC State, and has studied abroad in China and England. She aspires to work in government in the area of international relations.

Dean’s Scholar program expands

Aspiring to be osteoarchaeologists, federal prosecutors and museum curators, the latest cohort of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Scholars have big plans for the future. Thanks to contributions from college donors, the seven recipients of this year’s Dean’s Scholar Award can also plan on being something else — experiential learners.

February Student of the Month

Elizabeth Medlin is a double major in International Studies and Spanish, with a Political Science minor. She participated in the NC State Ethnographic Field School in Guatemala (Summer 2013) and is an intern for the NC Immigrant Rights Project. Active in student groups, honor societies and research, she plans to attend law school for immigration law.

Internship Enables Student to Aid Immigrants

Emily Scotton ‘15 (front row, second from left) recently completed an internship that connected multiple dots between her career interests and her majors in Spanish and political science and her minor in nonprofit studies. In addition to practicing her Spanish, the Park scholar learned how nonprofits serve the community. What's more, Scotton -- who's interested in a law career -- got to see how immigration law applies in a nonprofit setting and even assisted in writing an affidavit. Think and Do!

Recent Grad Advocates for Justice Abroad

For Ashley Honeycutt (Political Science, '12), a degree in political science was always a part of the trajectory of law school. But her experiences in CHASS and with the Susan Carter Scholarship inspired some changes in course. Honeycutt currently works with the International Justice Mission in La Paz, Bolivia.

CHASS Alumni — Anita Watkins

Anita Watkins (Political Science and Spanish, ’94) always envisioned herself at law school after graduating. An internship helped her realize she had a special interest in public policy. Watkins, who now serves as the Vice President for Government Affairs for the University of North Carolina system, credits study within the humanities as a unique and essential part of education.
