Graduate Student Alex Hyler Receives Sigma Delta Pi Grant

Alex Hyler, Graduate Teaching Assistant and Master’s in foreign languages and literatures student, recently received the Sigma Delta Pi Graduate Research Grant. The grant is helping to fund her research in the Yucatan this summer alongside Dr. Jim Michnowicz for her MA research project. There, she will be conducting 12 sociolinguistic interviews in Merida, Yucatan with young (19-20 year-old) monolinguals (Spanish speaking only) and bilinguals (May and Spanish speaking).

Jordi Marí, Outstanding Teacher and Jazz Performer

Jordi’s passion for piano manifests itself in his excitement and love for jazz music in general. “For me, as a player, nothing compares to the exhilaration of playing in an improvisational way,” he states, “which is what jazz is all about. Improvisation means you’re composing the music in your head only a fraction of a second before you play it. You’re creating something on the spur of the moment…it is a risky, exciting, and wonderful feeling.”

Class Project Leads to New Research on Spanish in North Carolina

For professor Jim Michnowicz and his students, what started as a class experiment is now producing intriguing research findings that will be published in a new book on language diversity. Their work, which provides further insight into the evolution of Spanish in North Carolina, also serves as a clear example of the kind of purposeful, community-based research that can be carried out by undergraduates.

In the Spotlight: Gary Mathews

Gary Mathews is a man of many talents and interests. An inspiring teacher, Gary completed his bachelor degree at Harvard and his PhD in Comparative Literature at Berkeley. He has been teaching comparative and world literatures at NC State since 2009. Currently, he also coordinates the Classical Languages and Literatures Program at the Department of Foreign Language and Literatures. Gary sat down with us to talk about his love for teaching and his many passions, including his work as a Japanese Noh theater performer.
