Postcards from Spain 6: Salamanca (¡Y Ávila también!)

After class on Friday we left on the bus headed to Salamanca. About 2 hours later we were checked in to our hotel and walking around the city streets among a lot of historic buildings. One of those buildings, La casa de las conchas, had shells all over the exterior walls because that was the symbol of the family who lived there. It is now functions as a public library and houses temporary art. Another building is an unfinished palace called El palacio de Monterrey, which is owned by a family -- La Casa de Alba -- with as much influence as the Queen of England.

Postcards from Spain 5: Cooking Demonstration, Paella!

Our day started with a trip to a grocery store to learn how the Spanish buy their food. We saw many of the foods we have been eating with our families. This grocery store had a huge selection of seafood. The grocery stores here are similar to the ones in the US, but have a much larger selection of unpackaged items.

Postcards from Spain 4: San Gobian Glass Factory and Whisky DYC

Today we went on our second group excursion! Our first stop was at Saint Gobian in La Granja a commercial glass factory about 10 km from Segovia which produces glass 24 hours a day by scheduling workers in different shifts. There we were able to tour the factory and learn about the process of making glass bottles many of which are shipped to perfume companies all over the world including...

Postcards from Spain 3: La ruta de los castillos – The Castle Route

After a week in Spain we have already learned so much! Our first excursion was to a monastery, winery and then to see castles that were built centuries ago. The monastery was interesting because all of the images on the large columns you will see below in the photos tell a different story regarding religion, culture, economics and other ideas at the time. It was beautiful and the open garden that was in the center was like something out of a movie. The winery was also a great experience because we learned about the process of making wine and the owner was very nice.

Postcards from España 2: Seeing the Sights

56,660 people. That's how many folks live in Segovia. Interestingly enough, Chapel Hill, NC has 57,233 people, just so you'll have an understanding of the amount of people in the city. Since it's near the base of a mountain range and surrounded by countryside, there is a lot of nature to see. For instance, you could be hiking and come across a herd of sheep but surprisingly enough, there is always something cultural going on around here as well. Such as flamenco music, for free! Opening the Door to Study Abroad

A new College of Humanities and Social Sciences pilot program aims to encourage more students from underrepresented groups to study abroad for the first time. Kickstarted by a $25,000 NC State University Foundation grant, the Travel Scholars pilot program will help some underrepresented students pay for study abroad and inform others about what resources are available.

Enloe High School Students Learn Language Diversity

A Noche de Dialectos aims at emphasizing the beauty of difference in language. “We believe that it’s important to talk to people about dialect diversity,” Dr. Jim Michnowicz states, “and that, linguistically speaking, there are not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways to speak – just different. And these differences reflect people’s identities and where they’re from.”
