For the last 16 years, newly-retired professor Diane Beckman taught French language and world literature at NC State, taking students out of the classroom to visit local museums, attend plays and enjoy many more events in the culturally rich Triangle area.

Postcards from Spain 6: Salamanca (¡Y Ávila también!)

After class on Friday we left on the bus headed to Salamanca. About 2 hours later we were checked in to our hotel and walking around the city streets among a lot of historic buildings. One of those buildings, La casa de las conchas, had shells all over the exterior walls because that was the symbol of the family who lived there. It is now functions as a public library and houses temporary art. Another building is an unfinished palace called El palacio de Monterrey, which is owned by a family -- La Casa de Alba -- with as much influence as the Queen of England.

Our day started with a trip to a grocery store to learn how the Spanish buy their food. We saw many of the foods we have been eating with our families. This grocery store had a huge selection of seafood. The grocery stores here are similar to the ones in the US, but have a much larger selection of unpackaged items.

Our first stop was at Saint Gobian in La Granja a commercial glass factory about 10 km from Segovia which produces glass 24 hours a day by scheduling workers in different shifts. Postcards from Spain 3: La ruta de los castillos – The Castle Route

After a week in Spain we have already learned so much! Our first excursion was to a monastery, winery and then to see castles that were built centuries ago. The monastery was interesting because all of the images on the large columns you will see below in the photos tell a different story regarding religion, culture, economics and other ideas at the time. It was beautiful and the open garden that was in the center was like something out of a movie. The winery was also a great experience because we learned about the process of making wine and the owner was very nice.

Be proud of being Black, take care of your mental health, and find constructive ways to confront institutional racism. That’s the advice that a team of psychology researchers has for young African-American adults who are dealing with the consequences of racial discrimination — and tips they want to share with psychologists, counselors and health care professionals who work with young African-Americans.
