Onigiri Action Event Shares Culture and Helps Children in Need

International flags fly in the Global Courtyard on main campus.

The Japanese Program in the Department of World Languages & Cultures recently held their second annual Onigiri Action event. This popular event, held on Friday November 8, attracted over 60 participants who took part in the global Onigiri Action campaign.

Senior Lecturer in Japanese Wakako Sera shows participants how to make a traditional rice ball.

This initiative, designed to help feed school children in need, encourages people to post photos of onigiri (traditional Japanese rice balls) on social media with the hashtag #OnigiriAction. Thanks to donations, each photo shared contributes 5 school meals to children worldwide.

Thanks to our enthusiastic participants, WLC faculty and students were able to help provide 300 meals this year!

In addition to making rice balls, Dr. Rena Shimizu of K-I Chemical USA Inc. gave a short lecture on sustainability and rice growing in
Japan.
