Marisa Ollio is a 2024 NC State graduate in Foreign Languages and Literatures – Spanish Education. She completed the requirements for the NCSU ESL Add-on Licensure Program and earned the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) minor. Based on her excellent scholarship and dedication to the success of multilingual learners beyond her regular coursework, she was also the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Teaching English as a Foreign Language Award from the Department of World Languages and Cultures.

When asked what advice she would give to students interested in the TEFL minor or ESL Add-on Licensure program, she said, “DO IT! I had so much fun and learned so much! Not only do I feel that it prepared me for teaching multilingual learners, but now I feel more confident in teaching as a whole.” As far as the rigors of the coursework involved and instructors, she shared, “Do the readings! They can be long but it is worth it. It will make you a better teacher. All the instructors are very knowledgeable and encouraging. Dr. Alison Turner, in particular, is incredible and really pushed us to be our best!”

One of her instructors noted that Marisa was always eager to learn and asked great questions about how theoretical concepts apply to her practice in the language classroom. She actively volunteered at the Refugee Hope Partners Homework Help during her undergraduate years knowing that she, as well as the students, were benefitting from the experience. During the Practicum in TESOL course (WL440) Marisa observed a stellar mentor teacher at a local high school and was able to put into practice all that she had learned to that point by teaching several class periods. “I loved my school! The students were so kind and I had a great mentor teacher in Ms. MacDonald at Athens Drive High School.”

Marisa was inspired to pursue Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) due to her desire to help others. She reflects on her interactions with her students and shares, “These students are some of the most incredible and resilient people and are truly a joy to work with. They are always so grateful and while it may not be the easiest job, it may be one of the most rewarding.”

Marisa’s future plans include teaching Spanish alongside TESOL. She also plans to seek out summer TESOL opportunities just as she did recently by tutoring a student from Ukraine “It truly is the best way to pass the summer!” For information about any of the Department of World Languages and Cultures’ TESOL programs please contact TESOL Coordinator Jennifer Despain, jhdespai@ncsu.edu
