Postcards from Spain 8: A Weekend in Barcelona
Barcelona: Saturday and Sunday

Saturday was an exciting day for the whole group. We had all been anticipating this day for one reason: we were going to visit the Park Güell. The park is situated on a cliff where you can see all of Barcelona. To get to the park, you need to walk up a very steep hill and walk through a lot of pathways. However, when you arrive, it is beautiful.
Park Güell is a park designed by the famous artist Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí was assigned to design the park by local businessman Eusebi Güell in 1900. While constructing this park, both Gaudí and Güell’s family lived there. In all, it is one of Barcelona’s most famous monuments. The Park has a few major pieces of architecture including the Casa del Guarda, the Dragon stairway, Nature Square, the Austria Gardens, and more. We walked through all of the park and was mesmerized by the details and creativity. We took a lot of pictures, made a lot of videos, and had a lot of fun! A couple of groups attempted to imitate the famous pose from the movie The Cheetah Girls 2 (which was made in Barcelona) as well. After the park, we went back to the hostel, spent some time at the beach, ate dinner, and eventually, we went out as a group for the night. It was a great day!
It’s our fourth day in Barcelona… at this point, we are all a little exhausted from going nonstop since we arrived on Thursday afternoon. But this did not stop us at all. Once we woke up, we headed to our new favorite brunch place, “Brunch and Cake”, where we enjoyed a variety of very fresh plates, such as avocado toast and fruit bowls. Then, we went to the hostel, changed, and headed to the beach! We spent the majority of the day soaking up the sun. The beaches of Barcelona are very exciting, very busy and very beautiful!
We had “bocadillos,” Spanish sandwiches such as tortilla española (an omelet-like combination of eggs and potatoes), ham and cheese, and chorizo (a type of sausage) on the beach for lunch. For dinner, the entire group met up at Sagardi, an amazing restaurant full of various tapas, where Mr. McConnell treated us to dinner. The way the restaurant worked was each person gets a plate and chooses which tapas they want to try. I tried four different ones: tortilla española with fish, ham and pepper, mushroom croquette (a bite-size fried mashed potato) and a mini hamburger.
It was such a cool place and the food was truly amazing… and we even got to see a cute puppy while we were there. We were all sad to leave Barcelona but happy to spend our last night there together! I think I speak for the whole group when I say this was a weekend full of memories to last a lifetime!
