Italian Studies

We live in a world where speaking one language sometimes isn’t enough. Today’s professionals need to be able to communicate on a global level.

That’s why mastering Italian could be a very smart move. An academic Minor in Italian Studies includes courses in Italian history, literature, art, and culture. For that reason, the Italian Program at NC State can help prepare you for many types of careers, giving you an edge in a highly competitive job market.

hello

Minor in Italian Studies

The Italian program at NC State offers four lower-division courses: Elementary Italian I (FLI 101), Elementary Italian II (FLI 102), Intermediate Italian I (FLI 201), and Intermediate Italian II (FLI 202). The oral/aural approach to language learning as well as small class size afford students the opportunity to develop their speaking and listening abilities. The four-course sequence also provides an introduction to the culture of Italy along with a thorough study of Italian grammar. An experienced and dedicated faculty ensures that students receive individual attention.

FLI 201 and FLI 202 must be completed to obtain the Minor in Italian Studies, in addition to three more courses in Italian language, literature and culture studies. To view the Italian Studies Minor requirements, visit the Office of Undergraduate Courses and Curricula.

Beyond the intermediate level, the Italian section regularly offers Spoken Italian (FLI 208), a course in Italian Reading and Conversation (FLI 308), and the course Italian Society Through Its Cinema (FLI 318).
Independent studies in advanced Italian can be arranged with an instructor.

Perugia is the ideal location for students who wish to acquire a genuine experience of Italian life, culture, history, art history, and culinary art in a safe, student friendly environment, while earning 6-9 academic credits. The classes may be taken for credit or credit only.  In this program students can fulfill the GER in Foreign Language and the GEP in Global Knowledge, saving two foreign language semesters at NC State.

Culture courses are taught in English. No previous Italian experience is needed and no placement test is required! Classes are supervised and taught by Anna Rita Bonaduce-Dresler, as NC State faculty and on-site director, and by Italian faculty. The program begins with a four-day tour in Rome! While in Rome, students will visit the ancient most evocative ruins such as the Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel and other historical sites. This program has been approved by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and NC State.
