300-400 Level Courses - Spanish

300-400 level courses count for a major or minor in Spanish.

Spanish majors should meet with their advisors each semester to review the progress they are making towards the major, check to see if they are fulfilling university and college requirements for graduation, choose advised electives which support the major, and plan for future semesters. Those students seeking a Spanish minor should meet with the Spanish minor advisor while taking FLS 202 or soon thereafter.

In the course of five centuries, from the twelfth century to the seventeenth, Spain shifted from being a heterogeneous territory where Jews, Muslims, and Christians coexisted to becoming a homogenous nation leading an empire where the sun never set. This course looks at how the process of becoming a nation state and a world power is illustrated through religious and class conflicts, the arts, and literature. This course evolves around the notion a definition of culture that underscores the ways in which a particularly society constructs and represents the world in meaningful ways. In order to understand how Spaniards living through the middle ages and the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, understood the world, what values held dear, what they loved, and what they feared.
