Teacher, Scholar, Poet: Tom Feeny Publishes a New Anthology of His Poems

Foreign Languages and Literatures Professor Tom Feeny began writing poetry as a teenager and has kept doing it ever since. Recently, he published a new anthology of poems,  Breathing in Technicolor, that was released by Aldrich Press last July. Breathing is his second book of poetry after a two-decade hiatus. His first book, Night into the Day, was published by Mellen Poetry Press in 1994.

Tom completed his BA at Boston College in 1958 with a major in Italian and a minor in Spanish. He remained at Boston for his MA in Spanish that he completed in 1959. Later, in 1968, he earned a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Virginia. His dissertation explored the “paternal element” in the works of Ramón Pérez de Ayala, an early 20th century Spanish symbolist writer and journalist.

A poet, scholar, and beloved educator, Tom has been teaching Spanish and Italian at NC State since 1970.

In a recent feature story written by Brent Winter, Tom characterizes his love of poetry as “an addiction.”  “But without the hangover,” he adds.
